LOOK FOR QUALITY, VALUE, EXPERTISE and SERVICE, not just the bottom line. Pre-qualify the landscapers you invite to bid on your work. Ask your friends and neighbors about their experiences with landscapers and prepare a list of question to ask before you invite any landscapers to your home.
ASK FOR REFERENCES, from your friends and from the landscapers you invite to bid. While not all customers want to have their names and telephone numbers given out in a general listing, addresses of completed and on-going jobs should be available.
ASK ABOUT THEIR LICENSE. The license will assure you that the landscaping company is operating legally, and that the owner has passed examinations demonstrating experience, knowledge, and a level of professionalism. Check with the Arizona Registrar of Contractors at (602) 542-1502. Automated information is available at all times, giving current status and complaint information. A license number on a business card is not always valid or current, or it may not even belong to that landscaper. The State of Arizona requires that any residential construction in excess of $750 be performed by a licensed contractor.
ASK ABOUT INSURANCE. Ask for proof of insurance coverage and check the lansdcaping company's limits and policy expiration date. If the company has employees, check to be sure they carry worker's compensation insurance.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK AHEAD OF TIME. A quality design and estimate takes time - yours and the landscaper's. The more knowledgable you are, and the more information you have from each landscaper, the easier it is to compare one quote to another.
Finally, AVOID HIGH PRESSURE SALES TACTICS. At the end of the job, you have to live with the results of the landscaper's work -- the landscaper doesn't. Never let the salesman pressure you into signing anything, and never sign anything that doesn't clearly spell out what you can expect to see at the end of the job.
